Check out this rare footage showing spawning behavior by Brook Trout in a local stream! Trout lay eggs in a nest called a redd. A female hollows out a depression in the gravel by turning sideways and swimming strongly against the bottom to clear out any silt. When she’s ready to spawn, a female lays eggs in the redd, which are then fertilized by nearby males. WRD Fisheries Biologist John Damer recently captured this cool video of brook trout spawning activity in a north Georgia stream. Watch closely and you'll see the female trout turn on her side and fan the sediment with her caudal fin. This is how she creates the large depression in the gravel (called a “redd”) where she'll deposit her eggs. The male stays close-by until he chases away a smaller male trying to take his place.
