The copper coil (also known as IUD) is a small, T-shaped plastic device which contains copper. It is put into the uterus through the vagina by a specially trained doctor or nurse.

Contraceptive Coil Side Effects
When is your coil actually protecting you? ⏱️ The timing depends on which type you have: 🟤 **Copper coil:** Protected immediately. Copper is toxic to sperm, so it works as soon as it is in place. Can also be used as emergency contraception within 5 days of unprotected sex. 💜 **Hormonal coil:** If fitted during the first 7 days of your period, it works straight away. If fitted at any other time, use condoms for 7 days before it is fully effective. Both types are over 99% effective once working.
