Suckling is a soothing gesture for baby elephants, so our Keepers always volunteer their hands when infants are feeling especially vulnerable - the comforting need for touch being universal. This intimate attention is part of the calming and compassionate presence we provide 24/7 to the orphaned elephants. Replacing the continuous touch and nurturing they would have received almost every minute of the day from their natal herd, so they can overcome the enormous trauma and tragedy of losing their
